PhotoPlus Expo 2013

I attended PhotoPlus Expo this year. It is the biggest photography trade show in the United States. This year was the 30th anniversary of the show. Lots of new products and plenty of "buzz" in the industry. These are exciting times for photographers. All the major camera manufacturers had their new cameras and plenty of networking. Today's picture is of Scott Kelby presenting on the show floor for Canon.

Photographer's you should know-Louis Mendes

Sometimes called the "Ultimate Street Photographer Louis Mendes shoots with a Speed Graphic camera with two flash units and a Polaroid back. I have met him and talked with him on several occasions. He can be found in NYC in front of B&H photo or Adorama when not shooting special events. If you ever see him be sure to say hello. Be sure to "friend" him on Facebook.

The Hearst Tower-Charlotte NC

This is the Hearst Tower in Charlotte NC.  During a trip to Charlotte in 2012, I decided I would get up early and take some photographs in downtown Charlotte. As I walked by the Hearst Tower I noticed that the security personnel were mobilizing. I know I'm a force to be reckoned with but this was just a little ridiculous. At some point at least four security guards had surrounded me. They let me know in a friendly way that I could not take pictures while on the sidewalks of the Hearst Tower. Now based on my training I could have resisted (just kidding) but they were very friendly and so was I. In fact, I had gotten some great pictures from several blocks away so I never intended to try to photograph the building. I thought about complaining but it was private property and they have that right. The security guards were very polite, friendly and professional. As photographers we often hear of situations involving security guards that don't have good outcomes.

I returned to the area this year and surprisingly did not have the same reaction. The difference is this year I was only carrying a point and shoot. For this excursion I only had my Nikon point and shoot. It was a grey day and I expected it to rain at any moment. My message is this. Perception and first impressions are important. Have a great day.
